Utah VIII

As I have previously posted, just a little south of Salt lake City is West Valley. The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is located here and it is home to a memorial to the American and Vietnamese soldiers who fought side by side in the hopes of bring independence, peace, and freedom to what was South Vietnam.

In continuance of my Faces of Remembrance series, I feature these faces today.

This is the American

This is the Vietnamese

I will note here that it is unusual for sculptors of these types of memorials to use the likenesses of actual people in their representations. As you might well imagine, doing so could lend itself to legal issues down the road. Sometimes a composite is created of various parts of several individuals. I could find no indication that this was what was done here.

Next time, on the 2nd of March, we will revisit Virginia, so meet me there, as always, at 9:00 am.

Utah VII Faces of Remembrance

As you know, I have visited all 50 states on this journey, some more than others and I must say that I might have spent the least time in Utah. Something I need to remedy as soon as I can get out of this Coronovirus quarantine and back on the road. Hard to say when that might happen.

Today, I was looking through my files and came upon these faces from Utah and in keeping with the Faces of Remembrance subgroup of this effort, I thought I would honor them.

This first picture is from the state memorial in Salt Lake City on the capitol grounds. This memorial which is dedicated to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia is the only one that I have seen that mentions these two additional sites. Places we were said to have never been, for all too long.

These next two are from The Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City, and it pays tribute to the Americans and the Vietnamese who so often fought side by side.

West Valley City is only about 10 miles from Salt Lake City, so, an easy visit.

Utah V

Just a little south of Salt lake City is West Valley. The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is located here and it is home to a memorial to the American and Vietnamese soldiers who fought side by side in the hopes of bring independence, peace, and freedom to South Vietnam.

The two battle clad warriors stand side by side proudly holding the flags of their respective countries. They gaze off somewhere, perhaps the future as they hope it will be.

The soldiers stand above an amphitheater like area as if watching over it.

On this journey I have made it a priority to try to take "portrait" like pictures of the soldiers I find. I am not sure what I will do with them all, but, I think I might one day do posts or a story just about the faces.

Next time, we will venture down a little further south of Salt Lake City to Murray City to a small city park that has a memorial to all who served. So join me on the 14th, at 9:00am for our last stop in Utah.
