Michigan XII

On my last trip to Michigan, I ran across this elaborate and beautiful memorial.

It honors not just our brothers and sisters from Nam, but many from many wars. This, as I have often remarked, is very often the case. Many, many places just cannot afford to build separate memorials to every war. What that says about how many wars we end up involved in, I'll leave to you.

Rochester Hills lies about 10 miles north of Troy and on the corner of Avon and S. Livernois Roads is the memorial. Called Veterans Memorial Pointe it sits at this busy intersection were hundreds, if not thousands, of cars pass each day.

The small park, home to part of the Clinton River, is filled with benches, markers and pavers honoring many.

Thankfully there are a number of parking spaces making access far easier than at some sites I have visited.

There is lots more here but I will leave that for another time.

Next time, on the 2nd of August, we will return to New Mexico, so meet me there, as always, at 9:00am.

I will ask, as I do at the end of nearly every post now, for anyone who has pictures of Vietnam memorials not seen here to please send them to me. I will give you full photo credit for the pic and any information about it you may know. Check your state, or anywhere you may have visited, from the list at the left, or any place else. Maryland XXXVIII

I set out to find a town in Maryland called New Windsor. I read somewhere that they had a memorial and for some reason I had it in my head that it was a plaque of some kind on the side of a building. I thought it must be an American Legion or VFW or something as these are not too uncommon.

Boy, was I wrong!

I was surprised and pleased to find this memorial at the site. Beautifully kept with many flowers in bloom, obviously the work of someone who cared.

As I was finishing up shooting my pics I was approached by a young woman who thanked me for visiting the site.

We got to talking and she explained that she and her mother have cared for the site for a number of years after taking over from a much older couple who just couldn't do it any longer.

She spoke about how the site had once been a hospital but was sold and a restaurant built on part of the property that backed right up to where we were standing. She further explained that the land owner whose name was Moor head wanted a war memorial built here and so it was.

Angelica went further to explain that she often models at car shows and has created calendars of same to help raise funds fro the upkeep of the memorial. We talked at some length about how they might consider selling bricks, as is done in a number of places, to generate more funding for the site.

It is hard for me to describe how it made me feel that this young woman was so invested in caring for this memorial.

Sadly, it is necessary to plan for the future.

Many, many thanks to Angelica and her mother for their care and efforts.

New Windsor is a town of around 1,300 and I salute and thank them for this lovely site. It can be found on High Street just north of Church Street. visit if you can.

I hope Angelica, and her mother, will see this and let me know if I have forgotten anything she thinks should be included.

Next time, on the 28th, we will return to Michigan, so join me there, as always, at 9:00am.

Maine XXI

While wandering through Maine, as is so often the case, I came upon a memorial I had been unaware of. Located in Carroll, this one is a little different as it only identifies those who served and/or were lost in Korea and Vietnam.

At first glance I was shocked to see a couple names repeated. I mistakenly assumed these were lost, but further inspection only indicated that they served.

In fact, only one has a n asterisk next to his name. there is no key, but one must assume he was lost. R.I.P..

Next time, on the 23rd, we will take another look at Maryland, so meet me there at 9:00am.

Delaware XXIV

While cruising around Delmar, after visiting the previous post at the VFW, I was looking for a park that purported to have yet a second memorial.

It was not too difficult to locate and the memorial here, like in so very many small towns is dedicated to more than one war.

Originally a WWII memorial it was, seemingly, decided to add a marker for WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam at some later time.

The more recent marked could do with a little TLC as it has been knocked off center by something, perhaps merely settling of the earth.

Unlike the original WWII marker, there are no names here for the more recent wars, just this simple plaque.

Located near the corner of N. 6th and E. State Streets this sign, at the edge of the park, tells a brief history of the town.

Next time, on the 18th, we will revisit Maine, so join me there, as usual, at 9:00am.

Colorado XXXVII

I visited Fountain, Colorado the last time I visited the state. I didn't know what to expect and after visiting a small, defunct memorial  about to give up when some teenagers happened to walk by. I asked them about memorials in the area and they directed me to this wonderful park further into the area.

Once called Caboose Park (look behind the tree on the right) and then Mayor's Park, it is now dedicated to those who served their country.

There are a number of notable features here, but today I will focus on the Honor Wall.

The following, in no particular order, are a few of the honored. They need no commentary from me.

There are many, many more here from 'Nam as well as our other conflicts, they like all who serve deserve our everlasting gratitude. their families need all the support they need, and they, too, our respect.

Next time, on the 13th, we will return to Delaware, so meet me there at 9:00am.

California XLII

In 2015 I visited Fresno, California to see the tribute to thousands and thousands of Lao Hmong people who gave their lives supporting our troops in 'Nam.

At that time, I do not think that i was taking "portraits" of the few statues I actually came across in my travels. I don't actually recall, but whatever, I did not do it at this site.

I have made an attempt to pull these faces out of this memorial to share in my ongoing, subgroup, Faces of Remembrance series. I hope you will grant me some allowances as these pictures are not always of the quality I strive to achieve in my photography. BTW, you can see the original post from Fresno here.

These two Hmong warriors are attempting to save this downed American pilot.

Fresno is home to one of the largest Hmong populations in the world.

The memorial rests in Court House Park, outside the Fresno County Courthouse on Van Ness Avenue. You can read more about these brave friends and allies here.

Next time, on the 8th, we will return to Colorado, so meet me there, as usual, at 9:00am.
