New York XXII

I have written about Eisenhower Park, on Long Island, in the past and while going through some pictures I found a few odds and ends that I thought I might post.

As I have mentioned previously this park is really quite spectacular and if you ever have the opportunity be sure to visit.

Every once in a while I find a memorial to those lost to Agent Orange. I once heard of a movement to get a National Memorial built to AO on The Mall in DC., but it seems to have become part of VVMF's In Memory Project which honors all who have died from any related cause since the end of the war. So, finding one specific to these terrible plague is always meaningful.

A loving, lasting memory. If this site is like others around the country these tributes are collected each day, so this one may have just been left.

And, finally, as I always say, I love when our hero dogs are remembered. I don't know why but it seems to humanize the war just a little for me.

New York XIX

Eisenhower Park, on Long Island, is a wonderful place of fun, sports, picnics and all you might expect. It is also a reverent place of remembrance.

I have posted before about a couple of the Vietnam memorials in the park and there is also a beautiful memorial to those lost on September 11th.

Today, I want to show you the last of the Vietnam memorials I found there on my trip a couple of years ago.

It is smaller but no less dignified or important than its larger companions located not far away. It is often the case that these smaller memorials were placed first and later "updated" by the newer, larger ones.

I especially like when the planers and makers of these memorials think to include those affected differently by the war.

Nearby are a couple of interesting features of the park that relate to 'Nam, but are not memorials in this sense. In a future post I will share them with you.

New York XVII

Eisenhower Park is a wonderful tribute to many of our Nation's heroes. You can find many memorials here and I have written before about just one of the ones to Vietnam. There is also a great 9-11 Memorial, among the many resting here. Perhaps I will feature it at another time.

Today, I want to share the POW memorial we encountered immediately upon entering the park.

It, of course, honors all POW's, but is a little different due to the barbed wire encased upon the top.

A haunting depiction of POWs is emblazoned on the side.

Dog tags list the wars in which our soldiers were imprisoned.

At another time I will show you the other Vietnam memorial here and also a separate one to commemorate those lost to Agent Orange.

Eisenhower Park is located in East Meadows on Long Island and covers nearly 1000 acres.
