New Jersey XI

Previously, I visited Berlin, New Jersey and photographed a memorial set in a Veterans Park. It was a nice little park with several memorials to various wars. The memorial to Vietnam was a plaque honoring all those who served, but no names were listed.

Last April the town rectified that by dedicating a new plaque listing the 28 from the area who served or were lost. So, I returned to honor those listed and to, of course, update this site.

This is the original memorial and the one I listed here quite some time ago. You can find that post elsewhere on this site.

Here is the park today with the new updated memorial.

The park sits at the intersection of E. Taunton and White Horse Pike.

Two 'Nam vets from the Borough worked tirelessly to have the site updated at least to honor the one KIA from the town. Eventually they won out and the 27 others from the Borough were all included. This had been the only memorial without the names of those who served or were lost listed, they got this rectified.

Several hundred people attended the re-dedication to these heroes, living and dead.

As I have told you before we just dedicated a brand new memorial in my home town to our 130 lost or MIA and I think that it is really remarkable the memorials are still being built or updated. I hope the trend continues until all are honored and that we are sure that all have been returned and accounted for to the very last hero.

Next time, on the 9th, we will return to New Mexico, so join me there at 9:00am.

New Jersey VIII

As I wonder the country I often happen upon memorials that I did not know existed and where not on my agenda. These are always special, a surprise in my travels. A problem, however is that I can usually not find information about the memorial. Those who are responsible for its building are often gone or unreachable. It is one of the reasons I write this blog, to have a record, to leave something for those who may want information later.

I posted a while back about a memorial in Berlin Borough and questioned the difference between the Borough and the township near by. A very nice lady, a vet , contacted me and explained the differences to me.

This is the memorial from the Berlin Township. I have no information about it so, I hope that once again someone will fill me in on the details.

I did find one casualty from Berlin, NJ., but it was not made clear if it was the Borough or the Township.

Next time, on the 28th, we will revisit New Mexico, so as always I invite you to join me there at 9:00am.

New Jersey V

I have spent a lot of time driving around New Jersey. It is not that far from where I live and is where much of my family came from, so it is always good to go there.

The memorial I am posting today is one of several that sit along White Horse Pike (rte. 30.) The Vietnam memorial among the others says Borough of Berlin and I have been unable to determine the difference between the borough and the town of the same name. Perhaps a reader will be able to help!

Near Taunton Ave. on the White Horse Pike is this really beautiful little memorial area. It contains remembrances to WWI and II, Korea, and 'Nam.

Off to the right in the first picture stands this tribute to those who served in 'Nam. There are no names listed.

My reading has turned up one name from Berlin, NJ, but as I said, I cannot tell if this is actually the same place. I have two other small memorials from places in the state called Berlin, so I am actually a bit confused.

You can see from the inscription that this was dedicated in 1983 and I read today, that the VFW in the area is seeking names of those who served from the "Boro" to be added to a plaque at "The War Memorial" but calls to that VFW were not answered. If I learn more, I will certainly update you here.

From here, we will return to New Mexico, from which I have just returned. So, join me on the 2nd of September, as always at 9:00am.
