Illinois XIII

Danville, IL. is in Vermilion County and they have recognized those lost in Korea and Vietnam.

Each of the two panels depicts a scene from their respective war and all the names of those lost are listed, by town, below.

Located on N. Hazel Street, it remembers the 25 lost from Vietnam.

The numbers in front of the names corresponds with the key to individual cities listed below. This is something I have never run across before.

The central stone proclaims the following dedication.

Next time, we will revisit Indiana, so join me there at 9:00am, on September 2nd.

Idaho VI

Very little information is to be found about this memorial. Called Veterans Peace Memorial Park, it stands just outside the Nampa, Idaho City Hall near the corner of 3rd Street south and Fifth Avenue South.

The memorial consists of a large rendition of the Ten Commandments next to a huge, unmarked rock.
Note the symbolic eternal flame near on the pole towards the right side of the picture..

This plaque is found on the site dedicated to those lost from Korea and Vietnam.

The Virtual Wall page lists 6 from the area as having been lost, but this stone, as you can see, lists seven.

Inside the lobby of the City Hall is another tribute to our brothers and sisters from Idaho, but I will leave that for another day.

Next time, on the 28th, we return to Illinois, so join me there, as always, at 9:00am.

Florida XII

Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary lies on a man made island in Vero Beach. After WWII the local waterways were to be dredged and a new bridge built. It was decided that the materials from the dredging should be used to create a memorial island.

Recently celebrating its 50th anniversary, this beautiful island retreat honors many from the Indian River area that sacrificed so very much for our country.

A greeting sign tells visitors some of the history of the island.

One traverses a long pathway on to the island upon which is a large American flag.

The island boast a large and varied variety of memorials and the one for our brothers and sisters from Vietnam looks out over the water, as do many others.

It is not too very often that those who suffer from or have lost their battles with Agent Orange are mentioned, so it is always a pleasant surprise to find a tribute to them.

Each of the services has a marker similar to this one, but this one was the only one on which someone had left a flower.

Next time, we will move on to Idaho, so join me there, as always, at 9:00am.

Delaware VI

Seaford is on the way to the Delaware seashore and on the corner of Stein Highway and Rodney Street is a lovely park.

The most prominent feature of several is this war memorial. It honors all who have served and especially those who were lost in our various conflicts.

Our comrades from Vietnam are honored here along with their forefathers from other wars.

Each entrance to the site is highlighted with this marker honoring all the services and alerting visitors to the memory paths that honor many, living and dead.

These paths meander through the site and seem for the most part to be alphabetical, but then you come across many that are not indicating, perhaps that theu were added at a later time.

I have spent quite a little time in Delaware and due to its small size, I suppose, I have not found too many Vietnam memorials, so I was delighted to find this one. Perhaps further travels will uncover others. As always, if you know of any, I would love to hear about them.

Next time, on the 18th, we head back to sunny Florida. Join me there, as usual, at 9:00am.

Connecticut VII

The U.S. Coast Guard served in many ways in Vietnam. the ships, planes and men are all honored with a memorial on the grounds of the Coast Guard Academy in New Haven, Connecticut.

In beautiful Robert Crown Park, just behind the Chapel, stands these two different memorials.

The first, a simple obelisk, names the various encoubters of the Coast Guard serving our country.

Detail

The second, a few steps further in, lists those who were lost in 'Nam.

I think that sometimes it is easy to overlook the contributions, valor and bravery of our brothers and sisters in the Coast Guard, but they, too were there, served with honor and some were lost. My family is steeped in Coast Guard tradition and I am delighted to be able to share this site with you and honor their service.

Next time, we will return to Delaware to see a memorial I only just, this month, discovered. Join me in Seaford, as always, at 9:00am, on the 13th, to check it out.

Colorado XXI

Thornton lies about 11 miles north of Denver and is the home to the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. On the center's grounds stands the Veterans Memorial.

Built in sections the memorial consists of a pentagonal base, an obelisk, several flags and is surrounded by pavers honoring many.

A statue, named Grace, was donated by the artist and stands near by.

Grace is an angel who is releasing a dove towards the heavens. The dove carries the dog tags of a fallen solder. Unfortunately, the tags are now missing, but part of the chain can be seen around the birds neck.

Inside the Aquatic Center are plaques to the fallen from the immediate area: 4 of whom were lost in Vietnam, I will write more on those at a later time.

The memorial which is to have additions made to it may be found at Trail Winds Park at 5130 E. 139th Street.

Next we will revisit Connecticut, so join me there, at 9:00am on the 8th.
